I’m Starting with the Wo-Man in the Mirror….
One of the very first posts made on my Facebook fan page was an image that read “I am Strong, I am Capable, I am Resilient”. I know we see countless motivational posts scroll down our social media feeds every day, but this one really spoke to me. “I am” are two of the most powerful words you can speak, because what you put after them shapes your reality.
I learned this many years ago. Around age 12, 13, or so I went through the feelings of inadequacy experienced by most preteens. I would question everything about myself from my looks, to my personality, to guys liking me. I hated this feeling of insecurity.
Luck would have it, one evening at an aunt’s house, I stumbled across this reallllly old booklet. (The kind they used to sell at the cash registers, right above the candy). It was a book of beauty tips. The book mentioned all kinds of tricks and remedies involving household items (that I now have no recollection of). However, I did remember one thing from this little gem that I would carry with me for the rest of my life.
It said to look in the mirror everyday and tell yourself that you are beautiful.
And that’s what I did. Every day. For as long as I needed to, I would say, “I am beautiful. I am smart. I am amazing.” When you tell yourself these things, you begin to believe it. And it begins to affect your way of thinking and living. You’ve heard it before, but inner peace truly starts from within. You will never be happy with anything else until you are happy with yourself.
I still practice this exercise from time to time. With so much going on, so many obstacles, and so many people trying to tear you down, you have to take time to remind yourself that You Got This! It’s okay to cheer yourself on. Look in the mirror and remind yourself, “I am Strong. I am Capable. I am Enough”!
